Andrea Cavero Arrivasplata, a student of the last cycle of Bioengineering at UTEC, participated as a speaker at the 31st International Materials Research Congress, held from 12 to 18 August in Cancun, Mexico. During the event, he presented his research project entitled “One-step bioprinting of reinforced multi-channel hydrogel fibers using chaotic advection: Reinforced muscle-like constructs withstand extended culture in a rocking bioreactor”.
This congress is organized annually by the Materials Research Society (MRS) and the Mexican Materials Society, which has had the participation of about 1800 attendees from almost 45 countries and more than 450 institutions in recent years. During the congress, various topics were addressed in symposia of interest to the materials research community.
Andrea presented her project at the symposium “Biofabrication: Toward The Development of Complex and Functional Tissues”, which included topics such as 3D bioprinting, chip organs, tissue engineering vascularization strategies and bioreactors for tissue maturation. In addition, it was attended by internationally renowned speakers in the field of biomanufacturing, such as Yu Shrike Zhang, of the Harvard Medical School, Brigham And Women’s Hospital, United States; and Paulina Nuñez Bernal, of the University Medical Center Utrecht, Orthopaedics, the Netherlands.
The project presented by Andrea was carried out in collaboration with the Biotechnology Center – FEMSA of Tecnológico de Monterrey, specifically with the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory “Álvarez-Trujillo”, led by Dr. Mario Álvarez and Dr. Grissel Trujillo from Santiago; both recognized for their work in chaotic bioprinting focused on tissue engineering.
In UTEC, Dr. Julio Valdivia Silva, director of the Bioengineering Research Center (BIO) of UTEC and Director of the Department of Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering, advised the project as part of Andrea’s Undergraduate Thesis.
